What smoke alarms meet the current legislation for QLD?

Photoelectric smoke alarms that are AS 3786-2014.

When & where must I install extra smoke-alarms and interconnect them?

From 1 January 2022 for dwellings being leased, re-leased or sold.

From 1 January 2027 for all other dwellings.

Locations change depending on the type of building – Every bedroom, haul way, living room, stairs.

Do I need to change anything now?

If the smoke alarms are older than 10-years, or they do not operate when tested they must be upgraded.

New smoke-alarms will be either battery, 240v or a combination of both.

What does interconnected mean?

Smoke alarms interconnected means they are joined by either a cable or wireless signal.

When one smoke alarm sirens every smoke alarm will siren together.

Who do I get to change my smoke-alarm?

A licensed electrician by law is required to install 240v smoke-alarms. Changing and installing smoke alarms may be a fast process and not costly.

Smoke Alarms must be:
  • Photoelectric (AS 3786-2014);
  • Not be more than 10 years old;
  • Operate when tested
  • Have all smoke alarms joined by either a cable or wireless signal, interconnected
  • Hardwire cable 240v or combination non-removable battery powered smoke alarm
Smoke alarms must not be placed within:
  • 300mm from a corner of a ceiling and a wall
  • 300mm of a light fitting
  • 400mm of an air-conditioning vent
  • 400mm of the blades of a ceiling fan
  • There are special requirements for stairways, sloping ceilings, and ceilings with exposed beams
